Aside from starring in the highest grossing film in Philippine cinema history—the 2019 Star Cinema romantic drama Hello, Love, Goodbye, actor Alden Richards is now also a certified animal welfare advocate. Last August 18, the talented heartthrob was launched as the Philippine Animal Welfare Society’s (PAWS) newest spokesperson in their latest campaign promoting aspins.

On their official Instagram account, PAWS shared why they chose Alden and his seven-year-old aspin Chichi to represent the campaign.

“To celebrate National Aspin Day, PAWS is launching the ‘I ❤️ My Aspin’ campaign featuring Alden Rihards, our newest celebrity spokesperson who will join Heart Evangelista in promoting aspins.

“The ‘I ❤️ My Aspin’ campaign aims to encourage Pinoy aspin owners to be proud of their native dogs and to be responsible pet parents to them. Joining Alden for this campaign is his lovable 7-year old aspin, Chichi, who will appear with the actor in various ads to promote aspins and aspin adoption.”

During his pictorial for the country’s oldest animal welfare NGO, Alden shared why aspins have always been close to his heart even before he joined showbiz.

“I’m always all for dogs naman ever since nagkaisip ako and right now it’s my own way of also giving back to my dog especially kay Chichi who has been taking care of me unconsciously kahit hindi niya alam, as much as I am also taking care of her. And also for all the dogs out there that need love.

“The campaign that we have now for the aspins is nung sinabi sa akin ito, I really said yes immediately kasi parang tama nga naman na we should love our own dogs. Frankly speaking, yung mga may breeds, dapat same treatment yung binibigay natin sa mga aspins natin kasi they are local dogs and sila talaga yung matatawag natin na sariling atin,” he said.

Through his newest advocacy, Alden explained why he wanted to change the discrimination and outdated perception that Pinoys have regarding aspins versus pedigreed dogs.

“We should be proud of our own breeds like dogs. Yung goal ng campaign na ito ay para sabihin sa mga kababayan natin na we should love our own. Kasi ganun naman di ba? Love your own brand para at least na-po-promote natin sila sa magandang aspeto.

“Sadly kasi parang merong unfair treatment when it comes to dogs na may breeds and dun sa mga aspin natin. Na kapag may breed yung aso at galing sa ganitong bansa, kailangan yung pagkain niyan iba, kailangan dinadala sa vet, etc. Bakit hindi rin puwede sa aspin? Bakit pag aspin laging ang ipapakain natin leftover food, yung tira? Yung puwede na lang tapos itatali natin, ikukulong natin. Kumbaga ginagawa nating guard dogs. Meron naman talagang guard dogs pero what I’m really trying to say is for us to give fair treatment to these dogs.

“Kasi at the end of the day lahat naman sila aso eh and us being Filipinos, we should love our own aspin. That’s why this campaign is to promote that and excited akong gawin ito kasi at least kahit papaano it’s my way of giving back to my aspin na si Chichi.”

Currently, Alden is gearing up for a series of shows called ForwARd: Meet Richard Faulkerson Jr. in the US in places like California, Chicago, Illinois, and Florida next month along with kapamilya actress Sue Ramirez.
