Geneva Cruz opened up about her journey as a single mother when she was in the US for six years.  

Geneva initially planned to give birth to her daughter London in the US and stay there for a year in 2014. Her plans changed when she realized that her 18-year-old son Heaven needed her to be by his side.  

"When I gave birth to my daughter London (her daughter with her former boyfriend Lee Paulsen) sa Amerika, it changed my life kasi my son needed me so I stayed for five more years. Dapat one year lang ako. I didn't come home for a long time," she said in an interview with MomCenter Philippines.

Heaven is Geneva's son with her ex-husband Paco Arespacochaga.

"My son needed me and during that time feeling ko ang dami kong pagkukulang sa binata kong anak kasi nung naghiwalay kami ni KC (Montero, her ex-husband), don na siya natira sa America and he was like 11 years old that time so when I moved there when 18 years old siya, we had a talk and I realized na kailangan ko bumawi," she stated.

She remarked that she was glad to have been there to guide her son during those years.

"'Yung mga bagay na ginagawa ng isang nanay para sa anak na hindi ko nagawa for a long time para sa anak nakagawa ko sa Amerika. It was good. It was amazing. Kasi pag 18 years old ang tao di ba parang mas maraming pinagdadaanan. Maraming confusion kasi you are growing up. 'Yung emotions natin medyo parang hindi natin naha-handle so it was a great bonding time for me and my son," she said.

As a single parent providing for her children, Geneva shared that she decided to work a 9-to-5 job aside from her singing gigs that time in the US.

"I found a 9-to-5 job. I worked at a medical spa. I knew that I had to look for work, hindi 'yung pwedeng on the side meron lang concerts although malaki naman 'yung bayad sa Filipino community around the US. Pero iba pa rin 'yung araw-araw na may trabaho lalo na if dalawa 'yung anak mo at single mother ka. So 'yun ang ginawa ko," she said.

On her advice for single mothers, Geneva remarked that taking care of oneself is key to be able to take care of your children well.

"Hindi magiging madali ang lahat, it will take patience, self-love, self-care, and attention para maging isang maayos na ina. Ibig sabihin, kailangan din natin alagaan ang ating sarili para maalagaan natin ang ating mga anak nang maayos,” Geneva said.

She added, "Part natin, sa pagiging babae to make sure na aware tayo sa mga hindi maganda sa atin kasi hindi naman po tayo perfect."

Geneva is currently living in the Philippines with her daughter London.

Back in May, she celebrated London's 8th birthday.

"Today, we are celebrating my baby girl @londonleecruz’s 8th Birthday at home with a simple party with the family and her closest friends. I think it is fun enough… they’ve been running around the house for a few hours now. Haha!" Geneva posted on her Instagram page in May.
