Lady Gaga might be on her way to an Oscar win for her gripping performance in House of Gucci. The singer recently bagged the Best Actress trophy for her role as the scheming Patrizia Reggiani at the New York Film Critics Circle awards.

Traditionally, the NYFCC is the first major critics group in the US to announce their picks for the best performances of the year and their choices usually also go on to win major awards.

Her co-stars and director Ridley Scott have also been heaping glowing praise for the singer-actress. Co-star Jared Leto said that Lady Gaga brought a certain bravery and dedication to playing Patrizia.

“She owned that character. It’s so different from what she did in ‘A Star is Born.’ It’s a total revelation,” award winning actor Al Pacino added.

Fellow actress Salma Hayek said, “Part of the secret of her talent is that she is special in everything she does. It’s what makes her a true artist. She goes beyond just being a singer, or just being an actor. There’s a level of commitment and passion and strength. She throws herself completely into everything she does.”

Lady Gaga also offered an insight to her character. “Before they see the film, some people might think Patrizia is a gold digger. But when they got married (Patrizia married Gucci heir Maurizio Gucci), his family had turned their back on him. So, she didn’t marry for money, she married for love.”

She further explained, “I believe that trying to better her situation in life came from an innocent place, not a guilty place. Tragically, by the end, not only did she not achieve her goal, she wound up way below where she was when she started.”

Aside from Lady Gaga’s performance, what also helped bring to life the character of Patrizia was the physical transformation via hair and makeup. Vietnamese-Filipino Frederic Aspiras has been Lady Gaga’s personal hairstylist for more than 13 years and his work in the film could land him an Oscar nomination as per Variety. If he does manage to land a nomination, he would make Oscar history as the second Asian American to be nominated in the category.

Directed by Ridley Scott, House of Gucci stars Lady Gaga (as Patrizia Reggiani), Adam Driver (as Maurizio Gucci), Al Pacino (as Aldo Gucci), Jeremy Irons (as Rodolfo Gucci), Jared Leto (as Paolo Gucci), and Salma Hayek (as Pina Auriemma).
