With her new series The Broken Marriage Vow directly based on the hit 2015 British series Dr. Foster which also spun off the 2020 South Korean series The World of the Married which made history as the highest rated drama in Korean cable television history, Jodi Sta. Maria said that they made sure the Philippine version would not be just a copycat series.

“The arc of the story is there eh. Parang there are directives about the characters na hindi mo na puwedeng baguhin. Siguro the challenge for us as actors is how to put an interesting twist and add another layer to the character. Kumbaga we watch these other adaptations. Yung The World of The Married pinanuod ko siya hindi dahil gagawin ko yung The Broken Marriage Vow, pero it was for a character study sa isang serye na ginawa ko. But for this one naman I was asked to watch Dr. Foster, yung original na version.

“Kailangan mo lang tingnan hindi para kopyahin, pero para tingnan kung paano mo pa mabibigyan ng ibang layer or ano pang puwede mong idagdag para makatulong sa character and para maging mas sariling atin yung character na ginagampanan mo. Actually yung Korean adaptation hindi ko na siya napanuod simula hanggang tapos. I just had to watch parts of it kasi nga it was for a character study so hindi ko siya natapos. Nalaman ko lang yung kabuohan ng storya niya nung nasa amin na yung script,” she explained.

“Si doctor Jill Ilustre ay isang babae na binibigyang halaga ang kanyang pamilya. Isang mapagmahal na ina, maasikasong asawa, compassionate na tao in a sense that she really cares for the patients na meron siya. She’s always calm and collected. Pero she wants to show dominance and control over any situation. Yung pagkatao niya na naka-anchor sa love is what makes her character relatable. Ang dami kong naiisip na emosyon that could represent Jill but I think it’s passion. She’s passionate about everything that she does. Sa pag-aasikaso kay Gio, sa kanyang asawa, sa pagiging doktor. Passionate din siya when it comes to fighting for the people that she loves and the things she values,” she shared.

With Zaijian Jaranilla playing the role of her teen son Gio, Jodi said that it is similar to her raising her real-life son Thirdy (with ex-husband Pampi Lacson).

“Kasi si Gio at si Thirdy halos magka-edad eh. Pareho sila na high school na tapos alam mo yung parehas ng pinagdadaanan in life. So for me parang ang similar in that way. Kung ano siguro yung mararamdaman siguro ni doktora Jill is the same way na nararamdaman ko bilang nanay sa anak ko. It’s just that maybe she would react differently because we are two different people,” she added.
