There was an unmistakable sense of pride from seasoned actress Coney Reyes as she opened about her relationship with her son Vico Sotto for a tell-all interview with Philippine Daily Inquirer this weekend.

This as 29-year-old Vico, her only son with comedy icon Vic Sotto, dominated headlines after winning against Robert "Bobby" Eusebio as the new mayor of Pasig City, breaking the 27-year reign of the Eusebio clan, in the recently held Philippine mid-term elections.

Revealed Coney, Vico was just a little over a year old when she decided to call it quits with his father.

“I surrendered my life to God on Oct. 29, 1990, and soon after that, I knew I needed to end things with Vic," she said.

“The first few years were hard. I was scared and would cry out to the Lord. How am I going to do this by myself? But in one of those moments of despair, the Lord gave me Isaiah 54:13—‘All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace’—and from then on, I felt His peace and confidence that all shall be well, no matter how difficult things may get," she added.

To focus on her son, admittedly as well as to keep her distance with Vic, Coney, then already a single mother, chose to drop a few projects except for her weekly drama show on TV. She was devoted to Vico, and every night would read to him stories as he was fond of books (“He wouldn’t be content with just one book. It had to be four or five at a time!," she said). Despite protests from his son, she would also bring him to church for Sunday school every weekend.

"I thought he wasn’t paying attention in church, but later on, he would say things that would surprise me. And when I’d ask where he learned it, he would simply say, ‘church.’ Nakikinig pala," she recalled.

According to Coney, it was his older brother, LA, (one of her two children with her former husband, the late Larry Mumar) who got Vico interested in politics eventually.

“When LA was in college, he would share some of his readings with Vico. Even at eight or nine, Vico was already reading up on politics and history, which he loves to do to this day," she shared.

But apart from his knowledge in politics, Coney said that Vico has always had a heart for service.

“When he was younger, he wanted to do an outreach for his birthday. It wasn’t the regular party for an orphanage. He would go and find out what they needed, then we would go and buy it and bring it to them on his birthday—quietly, and without fanfare.”

This was attested by his teachers in his grade school years where Vico would always be described as a leader in parent-teacher conferences.

“His classmates like to go to him and seek his help, but he never calls attention to himself," said Coney.

On his recent win, the 64-year-old star expects a major change in Vico's life, but one thing she's certain is "I’m just here to support him and pray for him."
