Filipina singer and YouTube sensation Reneé Dominique ticked one item off her bucket list after recently working with Hollywood musician Jason Mraz for a collaboration song.

Talking to Push and other reporters on Thursday, the young artist said that the project has been a “dream come true” for her as a longtime fan of Jason’s music.

“It’s been amazing, of course, and unbelievable. Sabi ko nga sa kanya, he’s a staple in my playlist ever since bata ako. The first time that I got an MP3, talagang nandoon lagi ‘yung mga songs niya. Kaya it’s surreal to actually be able to work with him on something,” she said.

Reneé, who piqued Jason’s interest with her viral song cover of Keane’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ on YouTube, said that she felt exhilarated the first time that the latter got in touch with her through e-mail.

“Everything that Jason Mraz wanted, ni-relay niya thru his team. We would talk through e-mail, and then they would send me samples of songs that I could sing. Until, finally, after a couple of months of working on the song, si Jason Mraz na mismo ‘yung nag-email. [He told me], ‘Hi, I’m Jason. I just want to connect with you and say that this is my e-mail. I’m so excited to work with you, finally.’ I freaked out! It was the best,” she said.

In his interview with Push on Tuesday, Jason announced that he will be joined by Reneé in the highly anticipated Manila leg of his ‘Good Vibes 2019’ concert tour for a live performance of their song. Though they’re still in the process of mastering the piece, the Pinay singer said that she’s proud of what she and the singer-songwriter have come up with thus far.

“It’s a love song. The song is called ‘Could I Love You Anymore?’. It’s actually written by various artists, not just me and Jason. It’s a collaboration of culture also since even the songwriters here are from different countries. Nakakakatuwa lang how there’s really no borders anymore, especially in today’s time, [where] anyone can really work on anything regardless of where you are around the world. I’m really excited for anyone to hear it,” she said, citing that the song follows Jason’s signature “mellow acoustic vibe”.

Of her reaction to Jason’s “angelic” remark on her vocal skills, Reneé said, “Syempre kilig ako! I’m really flattered. It means a lot when you hear it from someone who knows what music is. It’s really humbling also. Right now, talagang inspired ako to work more because this is really what I want.”

However, far from what she had anticipated, she said, was that Jason’s announcement would actually turn the spotlight on her.

“Nag-freak out ako. I wasn’t really expecting that it would actually blow up. It really did. Sobrang natutuwa ako sa responses ng people, especially my fans. A lot of people were very kind and very sweet and very supportive. Right now, all of this is really a humbling experience for me. I’m happy also to represent the Philippines in something this big. Hopefully, more projects would come,” she said.

Currently, Reneé is in talks with her music team for a possible debut album after the scheduled release of her new singles, ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ (under Universal Music Germany) and her upcoming song with Jason.

That her long journey towards success shaped who she is today is not lost on Reneé, she said as she looked back on what has been her music experience so far.

“It’s not an overnight success. I really did wait for [what seemed like] forever. I’ve done also a lot of things besides music. I’ve tried auditioning and stuff like that, and wala during those times. So, what I can say is it’s really humbling. My journey so far was a testament na talagang you really have to work hard but at the same time don’t compare yourself to other people’s pace kasi magkaiba talaga. It’s about working hard and focusing on yourself,” she said.

Catch Renee at Jason’s ‘Good Vibes’ concert on May 8, 2019 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
