On Rated K, Jake Zyrus, who is formerly known as Charice Pempengco, shared the first steps he took to publicly announce his new identity.

“A few weeks ago, binago ko mga pangalan ng mga social media sites ko at the same time parang na-feel ko rin na mayroon na akong enough strength to face everything. So parang sabi ko, ‘Heto na! Sige!’”

His journey has been inspired by his fellow transgender people.

Asked if he would ever undergo full sexual reassignment, he replied, “In the future pero not anytime soon.”

Although receiving moral support from his friends, the change he has undergone has been a shock to his family, especially to his grandmother whose opinion has been heard through various portals.

He added, “My auntie minsan me-message niya ako, ‘O ito, may message ‘yung mom mo.’ In a way, parang nakakapag send po kami ng messages sa isa’t isa.”

Despite not being able to talk things through with his grandmother, he remains to be optimistic. “Yung lola ko po hindi ko pa po nakakausap but it takes time.”

Jake further disclosed that Oprah has known about his identity for quite some time now and was very supportive. “Nag-usap po kami noong ginuest po niya ako sa show niya 2-3 years ago. Tinanong niya sa akin what I’m up to, ganyan. What was I up to? Sinabi po niya sa akin, ‘You know, I’m so proud of you.’”
