Courtesy of Mayor Nestro Archival</span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA — Seven tropical cyclone names from 2025 have been retired due to the “exceptional magnitude and extent of damage they caused,” PAGASA announced Thursday.</p><p>These storm names include Crising, Emong, Mirasol, Nando, Opong, Tino, and Uwan.</p><p>Severe tropical storm Crising and typhoon Emong both enhanced the southwest monsoon, which triggered widespread flooding in Luzon and parts of Visayas and Mindanao in the third week of July.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/7/23/half-a-million-families-affected-by-southwest-monsoon-crising-dante-and-emong-ndrrmc-2200">Half a million families affected by southwest monsoon, &#x27;Crising&#x27;, &#x27;Dante&#x27; and &#x27;Emong&#x27;: NDRRMC</a></div><p>In the second half of September, tropical storm Mirasol, super typhoon Nando, and typhoon Opong successively <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/9/30/damage-in-agri-sector-reaches-nearly-p2-b-due-to-recent-typhoons-da-1639">battered the northern and central Philippines.</a></p><p>Typhoon Tino dumped torrential rains that led to historic flooding in Visayas in early November. More than 250 people perished, mostly in Cebu and Negros.</p><p>Meanwhile, super typhoon Uwan lashed eastern Luzon with huge storm surges.</p><p>Mirasol and Opong, replacement names for 2021 storms Maring and Odette, respectively, were first used for the first and last time in 2025.</p><p>Cumulatively, these weather disturbances resulted in 373 fatalities and some P36 billion worth of damage, according to the Office of Civil Defense.</p><p>The replacement names which will be used beginning 2029 include the following.</p><ul><li>Chico – fruit-bearing tree</li><li>Elias – Filipino name and character in Noli Me Tangere</li><li>Magyawan – Visayas goddess of sea and death</li><li>Nilad – species of shrub</li><li>Omar – Filipino name</li><li>Tala – star</li><li>Upang – stink bean </li></ul><div><br/></div><p>A domestic tropical cyclone name is removed from PAGASA’s roster when its passage directly causes at least 300 deaths or P1 billion damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and other assets.</p><p>In 2024, the weather bureau decommissioned eight storm names – the most since the present naming scheme began in 2001.</p><div><br style="caret-color:rgb(0, 0, 0);color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"/></div><div><br/></div><div><br style="caret-color:rgb(0, 0, 0);color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"/></div>
