MANILA — The Philippine National Police has inspected and verified nearly 300 of over 2,200 licensed gun owners as of December 5, according to PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo.The inspection covers Type 5 gun owners or those allowed to acquire, own, and possess more than 15 pieces of firearms.“As of December 5, nasa 13.04% pa lang po ang completion ng ginagawa nating inspection and accounting. Out of the 291 na nainspect out of the 2,200+ na baril, 34 po doon ay nafind out natin na narevoke na ang lisensya at expired ang 734, declared lost po ay nasa 75,” Fajardo told reporters at Camp Crame in Quezon City.The PNP Civil Security Group (CSG), through its Regional Civil Security Units (RCSU), is conducting the physical accounting of firearms of licensed gun owners.Fajardo said the CSG sends letters to the gun owners, notifying them of the upcoming verification and accounting.“Bago sila pumunta po, [bukod] po doon sa public notice na pinost sa social media accounts and official pages [ng PNP], nagpadala po sila ng mga sulat doon sa holders ng Type 5 license. After nun, doon po sila actual na bumisita sa mga bahay,” the police official said.She added, “One of the challenges is di nila natitiyempuhan sa bahay dahil majority ay working. Kaya nag-iiwan na lang sila ng numero na pwedeng matawagan para mabalikan po nila.”Fajardo said gun owners may face administrative sanctions should it be found that they violated firearms regulations.“So far, maganda naman ang response ng mga individual na nainspect na po ng RCSU,” Fajardo noted.After the inspection of firearms of gun owners under the Type 5 classification, the firearms of Type 4, Type 3, Type 2 and Type 1 gun owners will follow.The inspection and accounting of licensed gun owners and firearms is part of the PNP’s security measures for the upcoming midterm elections in May next year.
